Published: 16th January 2019
New and expectant mums who are experiencing perinatal mental health problems can now access assessments and care through a brand new specialist community perinatal mental health service team operating across Lancashire and south Cumbria.
The brand new service will offer psychiatric and psychological assessments and care for women with complex or severe mental health problems during pregnancy up to one year after giving birth. The service will also provide pre-conception advice for women with a current or past severe mental illness who are planning a pregnancy.
Dr Ayesha Rahim, Perinatal Psychiatrist at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:
“We are really pleased to be launching this specialist community perinatal mental health service in Lancashire and South Cumbria. The service will mean that women who are experiencing perinatal mental health problems but do not require hospital admission, can access high quality care, support and treatment in the community at a location that suits them.
“Late last year we launched the first part of this exciting development, which was Ribblemere Mother and Baby Unit and outreach service. The opening of Ribblemere has been really positive and we are excited to be providing a complimentary specialist community perinatal mental health service to even more mums who are in need of support.”.
The team will be made up of a variety of different health professionals with specialist training, including Psychiatrists, Mental Health Practitioners, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Nursery Nurses and dedicated Administrators who will work together to provide a comprehensive service to mums and their infants, depending on their individual needs
The service will launch as a phased approach which will begin in January 2019. For more information about the Trust’s Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service please visit www.lancashirecare.nhs.uk/perinatal-mental-health.
