Psychological support following tragic events in West Cumbria
Effective treatments are available for those who are struggling to cope or feel overwhelmed following the tragic events in West Cumbria last year or following the inquests this year. Our Frequently Asked Questions document explains what reactions people may be experiencing and the treatment that may help you to deal with how you are feeling. Our trauma screening questionnaire will help you identify whether you are still struggling with symptoms and may need futher support.
If you want to talk to people on the phone, for some advice, or support, until after the inquest you can again ring the West Emotional Incident Response line on 01946 523666 between 9 and 5. The phone will be answered by a secretary who will put you through to a psychologist or psychological therapist.
If you think you want "talking therapy" adults in West Cumbria can refer themselves to ‘First Step': by ringing Telephone 0300 123 9122 between 9 and 5, Monday to Friday. If you or a family member is still experiencing significant psychological difficulties as a result of the shootings now, then talking therapy is recommended.
If you think you may have been drinking too much or using other substances as a way of dealing with the problem, then you can refer yourself to the West Cumbria Drug and Alcohol Recovery Team DART on 01946 599413. http://www.cumbriapartnership.nhs.uk/dart.htm
In each case your first appointment would be a chance to talk about what is going on for you, and so decide what would best help you.
Alternatively you can go and talk to your GP about different options.
