Guidance on sensitive reporting of mental health issues for journalists

Reports on suicide can sometimes be a trigger for people to take their own lives. Recent research from the UK and around the world has shown that media coverage of suicide can lead to copycat behaviour from people who are already suicidal. Following these guidelines could help to save a life

Please avoid:

  • including details of the method of suicide
  • using a photograph or footage of the location
  • using sensational or dramatic language that glorifies suicidal behaviour

  • include details of an appropriate helpline such as Samaritans 08457 90 90 90
  • seek advice from one of the following organisations:
