Renowned international health commentator, Professor Don Berwick, will be visiting the Better Care Together Vanguard in Morecambe Bay next week to see some of the joint work being delivered by Bay Health and Care Partners.
The eminent international healthcare opinion former was appointed by The King’s Fund and NHS England in October 2015 to help support vanguard sites and was keen to see first-hand how joining up health and care services across Morecambe Bay was working successfully.
During his tour of the area next Tuesday, Professor Berwick will be able to gain a good understanding of how the vanguards are spreading their work across the region and nationally. Prof Berwick will see the work of “Let’s Get Moving” campaign in Morecambe, he will talk with the community of Millom via a telehealth link and will see a demonstration of the Advice and Guidance system which has meant 1,500 people have been able to be treated closer to home over the course of 2016.
He will also meet hospital Chief Executive Jackie Daniel and NHS Lancashire North Clinical Commissioning Group Chief Officer Andrew Bennett, where they, and other NHS and care leaders, will explain the plans for helping health and care organisations to work more closely together.
Later in the day he will also meet representatives from the Fylde Coast Vanguard who will also brief Professor Berwick on the progress of their care model and how this is improving care for local residents across their area.
Jackie Daniel, Chief Executive University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our health and care staff to gain truly valuable insight from such a renowned, international leader in healthcare. Time to reflect on our progress so far and be reenergised for future improvements to healthcare for staff across Morecambe Bay is essential.”
A paediatrician by background, Don was for 19 years the founding CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. In 2010, he was appointed as the Administrator of the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services (the federal agency overseeing Medicare and Medicaid in the United States of America), a position that he held until December 2011. He has served on the faculties of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.
In 2013 he carried out a review of patient safety in the NHS for former Prime Minister David Cameron. Recognised as a leading authority on health care quality and improvement, Don has authored or co-authored more than 160 scientific articles and six books.
