Carlisle Dental Student named the best in the UK

James McParlane 25, won the grand final of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s Dental Skills competition – hailed as the industry’s answer to the Great British Bake Off. It followed a gruelling set of tests designed to push the finalist skills to the maximum. He has now secured himself an all- expenses paid trip to the Dentsply’s organisation in Switzerland to see the latest in preventative, restorative and dentistry education.

James recently told the Cumberland News ”The importance of winning this amazing completion hasn’t really sunk in yet. It really challenges you to strive for perfection. Arguably one of the most important aspects of dental care is to be able to demonstrate technical and communication skills – this competition focuses on those skills and the delivery of excellent dental treatment.”

James is a 3rd year student at the University of Central Lancaster and has been carrying out the majority of his training with the Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust at the Carlisle Dental Education Centre and also at the Oasis Dental Practice in the city. He was competing with more than 300 students through 16 heats.

Steve Jones, Clinical Director said” First and foremost hearty congratulations to James on this magnificent achievement. This reflects on James’ abilities and the excellent training that is being delivered on the course. The Trust is delighted to be involved as a partner in this scheme.

Each of the finalists from the UKs 16 dental schools undertook a serious of challenges devised to test a wide range of clinical skills in dentistry, covering stitching, fracture restoration, tooth shade matching and communicating with patients.
