High praise for West Cumberland Hospital from Jeremy Hunt
Published: 1st July 2019
Jeremy was met by Dr John Howarth, Deputy Chief Executive and Richard Heaton, Deputy Director of Nursing before a tour of the integrated surgical ward which has 32 single en suite bedrooms. He was shown round the ward by Claire Penn, Matron and Rachel McCarthy, Deputy Ward Manager and met patients including Marjory Mason from Cumwhinton, Carlisle and Dawn Evans from Maryport who were both recovering from recent surgery.
Chatting to patients Jeremy said that he was aware that the hospital had been through some difficult times some years ago, but had since turned things round into one of the best hospitals in the Country.
Marjory and Dawn had nothing but praise for the staff, facilities and treatment they have received while on the ward with Marjory even telling Jeremy the staff should be getting a pay rise. Jeremy then chatted to Claire and Rachel about patient safety and asked if they felt the culture in the NHS was getting better when it comes to learning from mistakes. Claire and Rachel talked about patient safety being integral in everything they do and the work taking place on continuous improvement such as rapid improvement process workshops. Richard Heaton who is also our Freedom to Speak Up Guardian adding that things are changing but there is much more to do.
Thanks to all staff at the hospital including ward staff, porters, domestics, and facilities staff who accommodated the visit at such short notice and were proud to show off our hospital.
