National figures show further improvement in North Cumbria’s A&E performance
Published: 9th September 2016
The latest national A&E data published by NHS England shows that North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust has yet again been improving its performance in comparison to other hospitals in the country.
The data for July 2016 ranks the Trust that runs the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, as 31st out of 138 Trusts with a major A&E department in England for the four hour performance standard. This is a huge improvement since January, when the Trust was ranked as 96th.
The national four hour performance standard is that 95% of patients should be seen, treated, admitted or discharged from A&E in under four hours. The national average for Trusts was 85.4% in July and North Cumbria’s overall performance was 91.4%.
The data demonstrates continuous improvement for North Cumbria, with the Trust previously being rated as 96th in January, 63rd in March and 44th in June – a leap of 65 places in just seven months.
Stephen Eames, chief executive said:
“This is not the first time this year we have celebrated this success as we have continued to go up the rankings and, as a whole Trust, we are getting better at seeing patients more quickly. We have gone from being in the bottom third to being in the top quarter in just six months which is an achievement that cannot be underestimated given the challenges we also face.
“I’d like to say thank you to our dedicated staff who have worked hard to ensure these improvements have been made. We receive positive comments from patients every day about our staff and our services and I think it’s important to celebrate these successes.”
