Kentmere Unit Update: Healthwatch Cumbria launch online survey
Published: 27th June 2016
Healthwatch Cumbria has launched an online survey to support the Trust in listening to the community about the Kentmere Unit at Westmorland General Hospital.
The survey follows news that the decision to temporarily close the unit has been delayed until the end of the summer pending a fuller assessment of quality and safety concerns. The delay was made following significant concerns expressed by service users, carers and the community, coupled with the Trust’s desire to be absolutely clear that it has explored every possible option to meet the minimum standards without the need for temporary closure.
Now Healthwatch Cumbria is helping the Trust listen to the community before a decision is made later in the summer about whether urgent action at Kentmere is necessary on quality & safety grounds. The survey can be completed online and will be open until 5pm 8th July.
Healthwatch Cumbria will also be collecting views at a drop in event taking place on Thursday 30th June 2016 between 1pm and 7pm at South Lakes Foyer, Yard 95, Stricklandgate, Kendal, LA9 4RA. Senior clinicians from the Trust will be on hand throughout the day to talk to members of the community and their views will be independently recorded by Healthwatch Cumbria who will then present a report to the Trust Board of Directors.
Dr Andrew Brittlebank, Medical Director for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said:
“While we are exploring all options, we need to ensure that we have a suitable alternative in place should a temporary closure be unavoidable. The online survey, and the drop in event, are both opportunities to hear what you think about Kentmere, and what an interim model of care could look like, if we have to take urgent action.”
David Blacklock, Chief Executive of Healthwatch said:
“We are really pleased to have the opportunity to work with people to hear their views and to ensure that members of the community are fully engaged in this process.”
