Lancashire and Cumbria win National Award for Effective Information Sharing and Security
Published: 25th November 2015
The Lancashire and Cumbria Information Governance Group have been awarded the prestigious iNetwork Innovation Award for Effective Information Sharing and Security as a result of their Information Sharing Gateway.
Up until now, Information Governance in the public sector has lacked the tools to keep pace with the sharing of information between organisations and their systems. This Information Governance group has developed the electronic Information Sharing Gateway tool which records how compliant an organisation is in regards to their Information Governance and the data flows they have agreed to.
Organisations that have signed up to this tool can easily see which systems each other have in place to enable the safe sharing of information.
The Information Sharing Gateway is an electronic system that seeks to simplify and streamline the process for developing, risk assessing and approving information flows between organisations in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
Yvonne Salkeld a member of the group and Head of Information Governance at the Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said:
“The idea for the system was simple but the impact has been huge. This system simplifies information sharing across organisations. Information Governance teams can see how compliant an organisation is and what data sharing agreements have been set up between the organisations by simply logging in.
It’s given our Information Governance teams more time to spend working with front line staff in the sharing community to improve Information Governance in the field.
This is a great example of what can be achieved when a group of specialists are empowered to solve our own problems. A proud moment for us all in Information Governance across Lancashire and Cumbria.”
The Lancashire and Cumbria Information Governance Group is led by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay, upon which Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group have been key stakeholders of, the group has brought together joint working among health and care organisations across the North West including; North West Ambulance, Lancashire Constabulary and many more.
