Older Age Mental Health Inpatients

Oakwood is a 12 bed mixed sex assessment unit with separate lounges available for male and female patients. Service users can expect to be cared for in a clean and safe environment which is quieter than an acute mental health ward. This is important for older people experiencing an acute episode of mental ill health (such as depression, psychosis or anxiety) and who may also have physical health problems or might be frail.

Oakwood offers a full range of investigative and treatment options, which are tailored to meet the individual needs of the patient. Generally, the length of assessment is six weeks but this can vary for each patient.

Staff working on the unit encourage the involvement of families and carers in helping with patient care and are keen to encourage and maintain close links between patients and their family.

The unit aims to provide high standards of care in an environment which supports people’s needs and helps with their recovery.

Admission to the unit

Your GP will refer to the Older Adults Memory and Later life Service who will arrange to meet with you and assess your needs and establish what support can be offered. Referrals for admission are also accepted through the ALIS service.
