  • NHS Trusts in Cumbria

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust are the secondary care provider of acute hospital services in north Cumbria and their services are based at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. They also have a birthing centre at Penrith Community Hospital

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust manages Furness General Hospital (Barrow), Westmorland General Hospital (Kendal) and Ulverston Community Health Centre, in addition to hospitals in Morecambe and Lancaster.

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust is the biggest ambulance service in the country providing accident and emergency services. They also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital.

Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust manages community drug and alcohol services in Cumbria.

  • Clinical Commisioning Group (CCG)

Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group is the main commisioner of NHS services in the county. NHS services are designed and delivered around the needs of local people.In Cumbria, for a number of years, GPs have been involved in planning how and where health services should be delivered for communities. Now GPs are taking on a more formal role. Family doctors - not NHS managers - will be responsible in the future for 'commissioning' Cumbria's health services. 'Commissioning' means planning and purchasing NHS services for local people from hospital trusts and other organisations.

NHS England is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health who oversees the budget, planning, delivery and day-to-day operation of the NHS in England. NHS England also commission services directly in Cumbria.
