Performance in Clinical Research

The level of research activity in each Trust is measured nationally by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Our Trust’s research activity levels – based on financial years – can be checked via the NIHR/Guardian newspaper website

Furthermore, in line with all NHS Trusts in England, Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s clinical trial performance is measured against two national benchmarks to improve the initiation and delivery of all clinical trials. Future funding to the Trust - from the NIHR - will be conditional on meeting these benchmarks.

  • Performance in Initiation (PII) — it should take no more than 70 days from receipt of valid research application by the R&D Department to the recruitment (i.e. consenting) of the first patient to the trial.
  • Performance in Delivery (PID)— for all commercial clinical trials hosted by the Trust, the agreed number of patients must be recruited within the agreed recruitment period.

From January 2015, the Trust will be required to submit quarterly performance reports to the Department of Health, and publicly share reports on our performance. For further detailed information and FAQs see Performance in Initiating and Delivering Research Guidance.
